Adams County, Ohio Descendancies

Descendants of James Marshall

Generation No. 3

1. WILLIAM3 MARSHALL, SR. (JAMES2, JAMES1) was born Abt. 1770 in PA, and died
October 05, 1807 in Adams County, Ohio. He married MARY POLLY CAMPBELL Abt. 1794,
daughter of CAMPBELL. She was born Abt. 1770, and died 1834 in Liberty
Township,Adams County, Ohio.

Notes for WILLIAM MARSHALL, SR.:
Most of the information on William Marshall,Sr. comes from the article on the
Marshall family that appeared in "Thompson's Historical Collections of Adams
County, Ohio" pub . The family appeared in Adams County in 1800, but William
died 5 Oct. 1807, so there are very few records there. He was a Trustee to set up
the town of West Union, an Elder, Clerk and Founding Member of the West Union
Presbyterian Church, so he would appear to be a responsible and educated person.
James Campbell helped Mary Marshall settle the estate, so this seems to confirm
that Mary was a Campbell, and that James is probably her brother.

Notes for MARY POLLY CAMPBELL:
From a letter written to Debbie Harrison, Sept. 11, 1989 by Mary Lloyd Steele,
great-grand-daughter of Frances Elizabeth Marshall and Joseph Nelson McNeil,Sr.
"My grandfather, Joseph McNeil, Jr. has written on a paper which I found in the
Marshall Family Bible, that William Marshall, Sr. was born in Pennsylvania and was
married to Mary (Polly) Campbell. They, with the Campbell family came to Ohio in
1800"

He married LOUISA JANE BLACK July 22, 1857 in Adams County, Ohio, daughter of JAMES BLACK and MARY COCHRAN. She was born March 12, 1840 in Ohio, and died February 02, 1898 in Adams County, Ohio. Notes for LOUISA JANE BLACK: Louisa's maiden name came from the Certified Copy of her Marriage Record that she submitted in her application for a Civil War Widow's Pension. The Record states that "Samuel C. Marshall, and Louisa Jane Black were married by me on July 22, 1857" D. McDill, MG . I.N. Tolle, Probate Judge, certified the record. West Union, OH 23 Aug 1887. Louisa's parents have not been definitely proven, but the most logical family is that of James and Mary Black who are in Meigs Township in the 1850 Adams County, OH Census. Their oldest child is a 10 year old female named "Lowiza" In 1860 the parents are nowhere to be found, and three of the younger sisters are all in separate households, working as domestic servants. In 1870 two of the sisters are in the same township as Samuel and Louisa, still working as domestic servants. It would appear that the parents had died, possibly in a cholera epidemic. There was one in 1851 in Adams County. Children of SAMUEL MARSHALL and LOUISA BLACK are: i. ELIZABETH E.6 MARSHALL, b. 1859, Adams, Ohio. ii. MARY C. MARSHALL, b. 1861, Adams Co., Ohio. iii. ANNIE C. Occupation Painter, Date of Birth 1875, Place of Birth Ohio, Parent's names unknown. Single, 65 at Death. There is no proof that this is the brother of William C. Marshall except that William's Obituary says that he has a brother, George. George is a painter, William was a Building Contractor and their father, Samuel was a carpenter. Both George and William are born in Ohio and appear to have come to Idaho about the same time. (Are listed in the 1900 Soundex for Idaho) vii. CHARLES MARSHALL, b. Abt. 1875, Adams Co., Ohio; d. Generation No. 6 14. WILLIAM CYRUS6 MARSHALL (SAMUEL C.5, WILLIAM4, WILLIAM3, JAMES2, JAMES1) was born January 11, 1864 in AdamsCounty, Ohio, and died February 02, 1905 in Boise, Ada County, ID. He married LINNIE EDNA DAISY MINER April 11, 1894 in Boise, Ada County, Idaho, daughter of PARKHURST MINER and ALVIRA SMITH. She was born July 12, 1872 in Cambria, Wayne County, Iowa, and died September 28, 1939 in Boise, Ada County, ID. Notes for LINNIE EDNA DAISY MINER: In January 2000 I asked several of my family members to write down their memories of our family. Marilyn Marshall Lemman- Daisy was 5'4" or shorter. She was plump in her middle years, and then very thin in her later years when she wasn't well. Had Brown eyes and hair until later life. Nick-named "Daisy" because of snapping dark brown eyes. Quite beautiful when a young woman. A bit cranky as I remeber her because I am sure she wasn't happy when Grandpa Van Dusen died and she moved to Seattle. Intelligent and interested in the world news. Died at 69 of cerebral Hemorrhage..Had high blood pressure and cataracts at a young age. Died in Boise after moving back in about 1937-38. Jean Marshall Irvine- Daisy tried her best to be liked-took me to silent films, bought us sodas, played games..but no cards. Donald Marshall- I was 5 or 6 when Daisy visited us in Seattle. She said "Good Morning" to me at breakfast. She died in 1939 of a stroke, I think. Dad and Mom and I drove to Boise all night in the 39 Dodge. Child of WILLIAM MARSHALL and LINNIE MINER is: i. WALTER CYRUS7 MARSHALL, b. November 05, 1895, Boise, Ada Co, ID; d. August 30, 1951, Seattle, King Co, WA; m. GLADYS FLORENCE NIBLER, January 17, 1920, Salt Lake City, Utah; b. September 17, 1897, Boise, Ada County, ID; d. February 19, 1954, Seattle, King County, WA. Notes for WALTER CYRUS MARSHALL: In January of 2000 I asked some of my Family Members their memories of their parents. Marilyn Marshall Lemman- Dad was about 5'7" and about 150# Had brown eyes and hair and was a very handsome man. Quiet, but very interested in world affairs and probably had a high IQ. Good in Math, but did not have a head for business. Well read; although mainly read mysteries for pleasure in later life. Good sense of humor and witty. Articulate in a quiet way. Died in 1951 of stenosis of the aortic valve which was inoperable at that time. Had lived a limited exercise type of life since his early 40's when heart murmur was diagnosed. Was 54 at the time of his death. He smoked and did some binge drinking of alcohol which probably didn't help his condition. Would have been a good candidate for a heart valve replacement which was developed soon after his death. Jean Marshall Irvine- Added to the above that her father was quiet, intelligent, and very patient. Loved to dance, party and play the piano. Donald Marshall- 5'7" 140# Died at 55 of Heart Disease..Had Brown eyes. Was a School Principal and a teacher in summer school. Nice man, kind of shy. Good sense of humor, and a good family man who liked to fish and golf. Had a bit of a drinking problem on weekends. Had a bottle of Kesslers hidden in the basement. Also smoked Camels and told me not to start smoking. One time at Grandmas he was looking for a screw for an appliance, and Grandma said, Walters always looking for a screw. He would make 4 cent bets with Vic on sports or whatever. Notes for GLADYS FLORENCE NIBLER: In January of 2000 I asked some of my Family Members for memories of their family...I also asked for pesonality traits...lifestyle habits like drinking and smoking. Marilyn Marshall Lemman- 5'3", about 127-134#. Hazel eyes, brown hair, very pretty. Very ambitious for her children. Loving mother, always considerate, but explosive temper at times. Died at age 57 (1954 of cancer which probably started in the breast or lung and spread to the liver. Cause of death could have been genetic..If lung cancer was involved it could be due to second hand smoke. Jean Marshall Irvine- Very ambitious and a good mother. Took care of my girls. Donald Marshall- Good mother, housekeeper and cook. Nice lady, but alittle ignorant, thought the Cold War was in Alaska. 5'2" 120# Died of cancer at age 57. Our family went to Boise every year to see our grandparents. A 13 hour trip then, 9 hours now. We would stop at Emigrant Springs Park in the Blue Mts for lunch. During WWII we had fake rubber tires and had 13 flat tires. Polyester not invented yet. I remember my Mom would wear her girdle for that long trip and then complain how it hurt.
