Walter G. "Shorty" Knauff


Walter G. "Shorty" Knauff was honored on Monday, May 12, 2003, at the West Union Presbyterian Church. Shorty passed away on May 9, 2003, at the Adams County Hospital in West Union, at the age of 69. Born and raised in Adams County and a graduate of West Union High School, he had earned a doctorate degree from Miami University and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. A retired educator with 38 years of service to the children of our county, as well as others. Mr. Knauff was respected throughtout the community as a leader, teacher, hero and friend. Active in nearly every aspect of the community, Mr. Knauff participated in the West Union American Legion, Young-Moore Post 100, the West Union High School Alumni Board, Lions Club, and the Adams County Republican Club. In addition, he served on the Selective Service board for 20 years, was a member and elder of the West Union Presbyterian Church and a member of the Adams County Honor Guard. If there was an event in need of rallying, "Shorty" was the man for the job. He will always be remember as a orator of the highest regard, speaking at innumerable functions, gatherings, and celebrations. He and his wife, Marilyn (Shell) Knauff, raised a family of five daughters: Michelle, Kathy, Kristina, Patricia, and Julie. In his own children and granchildren, as well as the thousands of children he educated, and those whose lives he touched in between, Mr. Knauff instilled an unquenchable thirst for living and learning. In the wise words of Walter G. "Shorty" Knauff, "There are no real answers...only a quest for the answers...and it is in this quest that learning takes place." He will be remembered as a man from whom to learn - proud of his country, community, family and faith.
