Christena Shupert

Friday morning, Sept. 13th 1895, the spirit of Christina Shupert, a pioneer resident who lived two miles north of this place [West Union], took flight to the great beyond. Mrs. Shupert was born May 18th, 1806, in Germany, and in her early life her family crossed the great deep making their way to this locality, settling in the primitive forests of this region. She struggled to maintain her family by heroic efforts, and thus she lived to see her community come up from its rude beginnings to its present state of progress. It was pleasent to hear her relate incidents and reminiscences of her early days. One by one these mothers are going home to their eternal rewards, and echoes from the hills of eternal glory bring to our ears the shouts of redeeming love at the meeting of loved ones on the golden strand. Grandma Shupert, as she was familiarly known, was a true and earnest desciple of the meek and lowly Savior, in whom she trusted for a number of years. She was unable to attend divine services because of her advanced age, but her conversation ever showed her abiding faith in Christ. She leaves behind her to mourn her departure, three children, nineteen grandchildren and thirty great-grandchildren, and a host of friends who do not mourn as those who have no hope. She united with the Methodist church in 1842 and lived a devoted Christian life until the Lord called her. Her body now rests beneath the sod in the old cemetery at this place.
