Leah Jane Simmons

Leah Jane, daughter of John and Cynthia Spurgeon, was born November 23, 1842 and died of heart failure September 2, 1911. She was united in marriage with Peter G. Simmons, Feb 6, 1862. To this union were born ten children, three sons and seven daughters, who survive her: John W. of Peebles; Ida M. Viers of Tranquility; Anna A. White of Dayton; Rosa I. Kennedy and Effie A. Thomas of Dayton; Curtis, Blanchard, Velva Gustin, of Peebles, and Martha at home. She had 31 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She united with the German Baptist church in early life and lived a constant and faithful Christian until death. She was in her usual good health, going to bed about 9 o'clock. She frequently talked of being ready to die at any time. Her faith in him and His promise was as clear as a sunbeam. She was not afraid to die, for her it was a gain. She fell asleep in Jesus and awoke on the other shore to behold the Great King in all his glory and to watch for the loved ones. We weep but she rejoices. We sorrow while she is at rest. She leaves a husband, three sons, and seven daughters to mourn the loss of their dear mother. The services were conducted by Rev. Rabb and Rev. Cowser, and then she was laid to rest in the Tranquility Cemetery.
